IMHO, Spectre was disappointing, to say the least. I'm a huge Mendes fan and am baffled that he approved that script. In fact, I've been playing with the idea that he was set up in some way, that it was completely out of his hands; that some producer went rogue and pitched the studio against him and Mendes' job was simply to make the whole thing look pretty. I mean, how difficult is it to write a good Bond film when the main character is already handed to you? The motivations of characters all-round just felt entirely off. James Bond throwing his gun away for a girl? I'm sorry, but the real James Bond would never!
