Targeted advertising works. Retargeting works. Banner ads work. Not for everybody, but do you really think that all businesses pouring money to advertising are stupid? I've seen e.g. Facebook advertising to work for online fashion stores and numbers tell a clear story: it works. And that's the scary part, IMO.
