John found duplicate content - slightly revised - on many webpages because these teeth whitening products are sold through affiliate marketing programs, which generally provide their affiliates with a lot of recommended content (to be slightly rewritten for search engine optimization) and images. Last time I looked at teeth whitening it paid the affiliate marketer at least $35 per sign-up. The affiliate marketers then advertise everywhere they can buy traffic cheaply enough to drive conversions for less than $35. This can be quite lucrative when done correctly.
Jay Weintraub has written at length on both types of affiliate sites John encountered - the fake news site and the fake blog.
