Good to see that upgrading is better. Compared to an installation from source, the Omnibus package is faster to install and upgrade, more reliable to upgrade and maintain. With your installation I think you have to upgrade GitLab, GitLab Shell and the nginx config separately. This is solved if you use the Omnibus package.
