I live in Troy, MI (A suburb outside of Detroit) and pay $75 for a 300 Meg Down / 20 Meg Up connection from http://www.wowway.com/ http://www.wowway.com/. I have lived in silicon valley, but now work in Detroit, the high tech scene in Detroit is one of the best.
- dheera 11y ago... and I live smack in the middle of downtown Boston and can't get more than 150 down because nobody wants to give us fiber.
- imjk 11y agoI live in Boston as well. What service provider do you use to get that speed?
- dheera 11y agoComcast ... I'm on their "Blast" plan.
- imjk 11y agoHow do you get those kinds of speeds with Comcast??
- kyzyl 11y agoHe signed up for their 'Blast' plan ;-)
- hrez 11y agoGotta have DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem with 8 channels. Something like SB6141.
- dheera 11y agoYep. Don't take ANY equipment from Comcast. I bought a DOCSIS 3.0 Cisco modem and a Cisco 802.11ac Wi-Fi router off eBay and everything has been working very smoothly. Seriously, if you want solid network performance, stay away from household brands and just get Cisco everything.
- medmunds 11y agoThat rate is at least partly because Troy has genuine competition between two cable internet providers (Comcast and WowWay).
- xorblurb 11y agoI live in France and I pay 50€ for 3GB of 4G per month (then bw limited) _and_ 200Mb/s down 50Mb/s up fixed Internet (official speeds but I speedtest them at something like 270 / 70 Mb/s) There are other operators which are even less expensive (but 4G coverage and upstream fixed network peering changes a bit).
- mmanfrin 11y agoThese are wireless prices, correct? Do you not have a wired option?
- icebraining 11y agoI believe the prices are for a plan that includes both.
- JumpCrisscross 11y agoI live in New York and pay $70 for 300 Mbps down / 25+ up from Time Warner.
- jseliger 11y agoI live in New York and pay $70 for 300 Mbps down / 25+ up from Time Warner. NYC also has competition between Time Warner, RCN (who I use) and Verizon FiOS.
- crisopolis 11y agoI live in St. Pete, FL and pay $104 for 150 Meg Down / 10 Meg Up connection from BrightHouse Networks. Even though VZ FiOS services the surrounding area BrightHouse locked my community in.
- toomuchtodo 11y agoOff topic: Any area in St Pete you'd recommend a early 30s tech worker to rent in for a few months?
- markeroon 11y agoAre there any interesting startups in Detroit now? Visited recently and I love the city, I'm curious if there's a decent tech scene.
