Hm, I think your data is rather skewed. Sure, most people on HN would probably self-describe as geeks, but that doesn't mean that all geeks are here! As for the Twitter and blog posts you mention, I'd put that down to a sampling bias. I think the geeks who do care are elsewhere - the natural sciences, for example. HN is a place mainly to talk about technology, and so obviously that is what gets most attention. Go to science fora, and you might find more about climate change.
