It is very, very unlikely any major architectural tweak will happen with Bitcoin ever again. The only thing that will ever happen is maybe a few additional opcodes (to enable lightning networks perhaps) but even that will take many years. (This isn't necessarily a bad thing... although I'm certainly not a fan of this approach)
