I have a couple of friends still workign COBOL and some weird hierarchical network database system that predates relational databases. They get paid insane money, work from home and don't work a forty hour week. I'm guessing they are closing in on 50. Every now and again someone tries to get rid of them but their is too much domain and technical knowledge, and you can't just swap in some outsourced guys. It's a tricky career path but if you just want to count down the clock on your career and build up cash for early retirement it does have it's benefits.
