Isn't it outright illegal? Can't you get them towed?
- donatj 11y agoYes, but no one stays at a yard sale for more than 2 or 3 minutes. By the time the tow truck would arrive they would be long gone. This is at its heart the reason why this is an overzealous non-problem.
- spdustin 11y agoThere are a lot of other crimes that can be committed before law enforcement would arrive. Would you suggest those are non-issues as well? It's hard for me to believe that you're not being a troll on purpose, and that you honestly are the sort of selfish person that you would deny someone access to or from their own home. Oh, wait, I think I get it. You don't own a house? That must be it. You're not a selfish jerk, you're simply ignorant of the challenges of protecting your right of way in case you need to rush your kid to the doctor's office, or have an appointment you're running late to. Oh hold on... You're a homeowner with no kids and no appointments because you're never late and have immaculate foresight into the wandering a of strangers? Surely you're just ignorant of the law th...Hang on, you acknowledged the illegality of blocking the driveway, and told the homeowner to suck it up. So you are either a troll or a selfish person with no respect for property or the law. Stay off my driveway. And my lawn.
- donatj 11y agoI actually rent a house with intent to buy soon. If someone did block my driveway, and I needed to get somewhere I would politely ask them to move because that's how human interaction should work. I'm not trolling, I'm making a general plea for more cool headed reasonable human interaction. If there were an emergency and my driveway was blocked I would probably drive through the grass as it is just grass and I have my priorities straight. Having your driveway blocked for a couple minutes isn't the end of the world. If you don't have a couple minutes to spare in your day for something that may go wrong you're headed for trouble. Things go wrong constantly, that's life. You can either laugh or get worked up into a froth. You'll live longer doing the prior. As for crimes, I would say victimless ones such as this should go unpunished. Costing someone hundreds of dollars to get their car back because they mildly inconvenienced you? You're doing far more harm to them than they did to you. That kind of enforcement just makes the world a much more unfriendly place, and does not serve the common good.
- JustSomeNobody 11y agoI was cool headed when i asked them to please not block my driveway. They got hot headed and argued because they are rude people. I couldn't potentially drive through my grass yard (if I had needed to) because all the non rude people were properly and legally parking along the grass in front of my house. (At various times, sure, I could, but not always. It was a pretty popular event). Edit: For clarity.
- criddell 11y ago> I'm not trolling, I'm making a general plea for more cool headed reasonable human interaction. That's great. Would you park and block somebody's driveway?

I'm not trolling, I'm making a general plea for more cool headed reasonable human interaction. That is like politely asking people to not park in handicap spaces instead of handing out tickets in the hundreds of dollars. The reason the tickets are justified is because it wasn't an accident (I'm sure a small number of cases are and it might be possible to get it tossed if the space is improperly marked). They purposefully, and dare I say selfishly, made the choice to do something they knew they shouldn't have which can cause problems for others. Yes, you could respond politely, but at a certain point politeness doesn't really cut it. Which is why we have tickets. >You're doing far more harm to them than they did to you. That kind of enforcement just makes the world a much more unfriendly place, and does not serve the common good. A couple hundred dollar ticket can really mess up a lower income family, and they were only using the space for a couple of minutes while they ran in to buy some milk/drop off a letter/what have you. You are definitely doing more harm to them than they did to you. But if you didn't do this, those parking spaces would never be available for those who are truly handicapped because of the unending stream of people running in for just a minute.
- dang 11y agoPersonal attacks are not allowed on HN. Please don't do this.
- mistercow 11y ago> Yes, but no one stays at a yard sale for more than 2 or 3 minutes That would be an exceptionally short visit to a yard sale. No way do you actually manage to buy something in less than 180 seconds. More likely, they'll be there for 10-15 minutes. That's still too short for a tow truck to come, but it's not too short to be an inconvenience.
