I'm curious - wouldn't it be cheaper to check in with a sat phone daily, rather than having a bush pilot do a flyover?

  I would assume they don't want to carry a satellite phone as that would give them a connection to that which they are intentionally trying to get away from.

  perhaps the pilot doesn't have to divert much from their regular route to check in. Do they usually fly daily?
