Thanks to rms for all of his work! Emacs is still my favorite text editor when in a terminal window, which is most of the time. Maybe one day I'll really embrace vim also, but it's always been a struggle.

There was another maintainer between rms and John Wiegly: Stefan Monnier.

  And Stefan was a great maintainer. I was sad when I heard he was stepping down, but I can't think of a replacement that would make me happier than John.

  And, for completeness, Chong Yidong, how co-maintained together with Stefan for quite a while (and did a great job as well).
