Ask HN: Do you think climate change is a problem? What are you doing about it?
Hacker News is sometimes an odd community. There seems to be a very large group of smart people here with a disproportionate percentage who think that climate change isn't a problem, or isn't happening, or isn't human-caused. This has been the general tone of Hacker News comments for years and still stands today. Very few climate change stories are voted to the front page, and when they are, the discussion is vitriolic. Why is this?
Does the Hacker News community consider climate change to be important?
- mooreds 11y agoI do consider this to be important. As for what I am doing, I have made lifestyle changes and support some organizations working to alleviate the issue.
- radiorental 11y agoEnergy begets population growth. Whether thats the fungal growth on a dead tree, the ant colony that's found it's way in to the cookie jar in your kitchen, the algae bloom thriving on a mineral imbalance (manmade or otherwise) Or our accelerating use of tools to advance ourselves. Nature has provided the most advanced species on the planet with easy access to bountiful energy. I, for one, believe our impending predicament is a forgone conclusion. The underlying driver of climate change is the byproduct of our natural population growth, which in turn is a factor of evolution. We're in the start/middle of the Holocene extinction event. It's a perfectly natural consequence of life on earth. Is it a problem, no more than the inevitability of our own individual mortality. It's the circle of life. With all that nihilism aside. I choose to lead a simple lifestyle and work at an organisation whose focus is developing the advanced tools used to; get us off this planet, design ev's, simulate climate models, educate our future engineers.
