The [Racket gui toolkit](http://docs.racket-lang.org/gui/ http://docs.racket-lang.org/gui/) is successfully multithreaded, and manages this despite being implemented on top of existing non-multithreaded and non-thread-safe toolkits. It's hard, but it's certainly not impossible.
