It isn't fair to compare U.S with countries like Japan, Denmark etc. U.S is very big and very diverse compared to these countries and that presents a different set of challenges. Once a friend and I started counting languages as we walked around Times Square. In 20 mins, we counted a dozen then gave up (we couldn't identify the others we heard). With such diversity, it is not easy to agree on anything without lots of effort, discussions and compromises.
