My grandparents' house in a deeply rural part of New England has one of those lights. Without it it's pitch dark out there, and since the bedroom is on the other side of the house it's easier to just leave it on all the time in case of needing to get something from the car or let one of the cats back in. I doubt they've ever thought about any kind of intruder, given that it's an obscure dirt road where there's basically no reason to go unless you live there.
