They're usually left on all night even if no-one's out, and in my experience the justification you'll hear for that is security. Maybe it's a regional thing? Of course, their actual primary purpose is to ensure that if you have to work late in the shed you're covered in moths and mayflies by the time you make it back to the house. Wouldn't want to enter the house without a good layer of insects all over you. Not proper. They've really done their job when you get a couple in your mouth. In case you missed dinner.
