I could make enough in other companies - where the opportunities for advancing were higher and where the work environment was nicer - to get what I wanted out of life. So, the money was more something that would have been nice to have if someone had offered it to me out of the blue, but of itself didn't/wouldn't result in any significant lasting increase in happiness by comparison to the alternatives.
