Hi, long time Drupal dev here (http://drupal.org/user/404732 http://drupal.org/user/404732). The answer to this depends on these questions:
1) Do you have a pressing need to get a site out the door in the next 3-6 months? (i.e. a client that wants the site done or similar)
2) Are you already experienced with other PHP frameworks/libraries, particularly those from Packagist?
There may be other factors, but I'd say those are the two big ones.
Answers:
#1 yes, #2 yes: Maybe use Drupal 8, but be prepared to port modules from D7 to D8. This is not a hard thing to do, and it's reasonably well documented, but would impact your timeline.
#1 yes, #2 no: Use Drupal 7. Deadlines and inexperience are not a good place to try something that only hit rc this month.
#1 no, #2 yes: Use Drupal 8. You're exactly the kind of person that would benefit from jumping into D8 a little early.
#1 no, @2 no: Use Drupal 8, and expect a steep learning curve.
- nickthemagicman 11y agoThanks for the detailed response. Im a rails guy but Im still scoping out Drupal atm. It looks excellent for rapid app dev. I need it for essentially a clone of ratemyprofessor.com. Would it be good for that use case? If so I think the time invested would be very worthwhile.
