PC: “CRUD refers to basic database functions — create, read, update and delete — and in my mind, the acronym describes most poorly built products: a database with a UI slapped on top of it, with no real user experience to speak of.
We want to showcase the best of Indian creativity and ingenuity in product development. So we coined the name NotCRUD to describe quality custom-built software and hardware that Indians are capable of building.”
- linuxkerneldev 11y ago> showcase the best of Indian creativity and ingenuity in product development. I genuinely don't understand above. You want to showcase the "best creativity" by showing that you yourself describe as "the Hacker News of India". I think you may have a different understanding of what creativity is than what I have. Also, about this concept of "best of India" and such things, the line that Peter Thiel loves to use comes to mind. The something of somewhere is the nothing of nowhere.
- chetanahuja 11y agoI think there's a place for an India, the location, specific well-maintained tech discussion forum. The original hacker news may not be "officially" specific to any place but in practice it's very clearly of and for silicon valley first and foremost. The valley bias on this HN is natural and organic. Simply because of the location of most of it's audience. You can look at the trends of upvoting and frontpage activity and clearly see how the Pacific timezone affects the activity on this site. I expect an India focused forum to be most active during Indian waking hours and that alone should make it a worthwhile thing to exist.
- dontmentionit 11y agoI never understand the point of what nationality has to do with ingenuinity or creativity. Seems nothing more than marketing strategy to me. And CRUD does not really mean "poorly build products" either. It's just that - Create, Read, Update, and Delete. That's it.
- paraschopra 11y agoIt doesn't have much to do. Software knows no boundaries. But the whole point of community, any community, is that a filter can provide incredible focus. And this focus is what can become a catalyst in future for encouragement and motivation. For starting up VWO.com I was hugely inspired by HN. I'm hoping notCRUD can become such a platform for many other Indian engineers where they know interesting stuff is happen ing in a country where many think only outsourcing happens.
- thrownear 11y agoThat is quite flawed. and quite honestly one of the dumbest things I have ever read here. You also come across as quite arrogant or entitled when you say that all CRUD applications are poorly built with no 'user experience' whatever that means. >We want to showcase the best of Indian creativity and ingenuity in product development. So we coined the name NotCRUD to describe quality custom-built software... I am an Indian and I am cringing so hard right now! Ouch.
- paraschopra 11y agoIn the telephonic interview the reporter paraphrased my words in his own understanding. I didn't say "poorly built products". Obviously there can be well engineered CRUD apps. What I had said that CRUD apps are simple and the platform is meant to showcase and highlight more complex projects.
- thrownear 11y ago>What I had said that CRUD apps are simple.. Still wrong. CRUD apps need not always be "simple". And the whole "to hightlight complex projects" thing is misguided. No one is interested in "complexity"..
