Netflix's $12M Gamble on “Beasts of No Nation”
- n0us 11y agoIdris Elba is an excellent actor and I'm looking forward to watching this. I'm also hoping to see him as the next James Bond when Craig's contract runs up.
- protomyth 11y agoHe is an amazing actor with a great range, and I'm hoping he is not the next James Bond. It would be a waste. The thought that some studio is not willing to do something original with someone like that troubles me greatly. Plus, recycling these roles with simple replacement just seems insulting. Its basically saying that there is no original thought to culture and audiences cannot accept the new.
- cbgb 11y agoI would hardly categorize Daniel Craig's refresh of Pierce Brosnan's Bond interpretation as "simple replacement." I think each new Bond actor has great potential to bring their own unique artistic interpretation to the role and to make it work for them.
- protomyth 11y agoI would (I'm not a Daniel Craig fan and his saving grace is he got better scripts than Brosnan), and it really would be a shame if such a good actor were cast in a series that wasn't designed for him from the ground up.
- dogma1138 11y agoNot sure if it's just the scripts the new bond films are much more "realistic" and gritty than the more fun and lighthearted older Bonds including those that Pierce played in. That said however Craig seem to have a much better emotional range than Brosnan, or at least he's a better type cast for the "new" bond. Brosnan kinda made that cocky can't do anything wrong thong melting bond work. But he would probably not being able to play the new bond judging by his quite poor performances in any of the serious dramas he ever had a role in.

- jerf 11y agoI'm kind of willing to give the Bond franchise a pass on this front. It's been a brand, if not its own mini-genre, for longer than I've been alive. And it's not like Hollywood is performing brand necromancy on it; it's been active for a good bit of that time. It's more like Doctor Who and less like Charlie's Angels.
- Roodgorf 11y agoWow, Doctor Who is actually a fantastic comparison I had never thought of before.
- amyjess 11y agoFans of both franchises have been making this comparison for years, and one of the more famous fan theories is that Bond is a Time Lord (which is usually tongue-in-cheek... well, a little bit at least). I always like it when someone new notices the similarities :)
- protomyth 11y agoDr. Who I can see, all of the doctors have been able to put a truly unique stamp on the franchise and the situations allowed are really broad. James Bond is just the wrong vehicle, he deserves his own start at a franchise. He needs his Die Hard, not to be the next guy in the queue.
- Apocryphon 11y agoYeah, I understand that some series are perpetual because they're basically cultural institutions. We shouldn't expend extra effort to revive them if there's no current interest (such as, say, Star Trek as a TV show), but we shouldn't feel too bad if people want to keep watching them.

- ghrifter 11y agoLooking into Craig's remaning James Bond contracts says about 2 more films after Spectre (releasing this November)[0]. Sure would be cool to have Idris as James Bond, he is an amazing actor. 0 - https://www.quora.com/How-many-more-Bond-movies-do-you-think-Daniel-Craig-has-left https://www.quora.com/How-many-more-Bond-movies-do-you-think...
- uncletaco 11y agoThat is actually speculation that there are two more films. He's only contractually obligated to one more. But things could change.
- programmernews3 11y agoHe is a good actor but why dont they give him a different super spy film? James Bond is a British spy of Scottish ancestry. It would be cultural misappropriation.
- papercrane 11y agoDaniel Craig is no more culturally Scottish than Idris Elba.
- uncletaco 11y agoIdris Elba was born, raised, and educated in England and is as entitled to play the role of James Bond as any Briton, though none of that should matter. By your logic Pierce Brosnan's (Irish) turn as Bond was an even larger case of cultural misappropriation due him not being a Briton.
- programmernews3 11y agoThen why is it a big deal to have a white actress play Tiger Lily in the current Pan film? http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/07/tiger-lily-peter-pan-native-american-stereotype http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/07/tiger-lily-pete... Would you have been happy with a white south African playing Nelson Mandela?

- uncletaco 11y agoOr Chiwetel Ejiofor. Honestly if they both end up in consideration as a replacement for Craig they should flip a coin: heads gets Bond, tails gets Blade reboot.
- username3 11y agoTime to buy Netflix stock that fell 10%.
- sagarun 11y agostill expensive
- rokhayakebe 11y agoExcellent. It still baffles me why I have to drive to the movies to pay $10, when I can pay the same $10 bucks at home.
- gagege 11y agoDo you have a 20 foot wide screen and top of the line surround sound system at home (not the mention the snacks)? Going to the theater is a much better experience to me than sitting at home.
- earlz 11y agoNo, but I also am not surrounded by unfamiliar people talking and texting and even chewing and getting up randomly at my house.. Oh, also being able to pause a movie if needed would be nice
- biot 11y agoA decent setup can actually be better than a theater. It's not about the size of the screen but the angle of view, which you can achieve at home with either a large TV or certainly with a projector. And these days, a couple going to the movies 20 times (and buying popcorn, drinks, snacks) will easily pay for a big TV or projector plus nice surround system. And you have the benefit of being able to replay scenes, take breaks, turn on subtitles if you can't understand something, not be subjected to 20 minutes of pre-movie advertising, etc. Not to mention those $50 in snacks you can buy yourself for $5 and put the savings you accumulate over time towards improving your home theater setup with better seating, sound and light proofing, etc.
- Raphmedia 11y agoIt's a matter of perception. Sitting closer to a smaller 4k screen will give you a better experience than the big badly dimmed screen at the movies. A good pair of quality headphones ($300+) will also sound better than the often too loud sound system in the cinema. I can also set my own EQ and add sound compression to movies where the music, dialogs and special effect are badly balanced. As for the snacks, they charge double or triple the price of everywhere else on the planet. The only reason I go to a theater is out of nostalgia. For a while, I thought that 3d would give me a reason to go the the cinema, but I've yet to experience 3d in a satisfying way.
- interesting_att 11y agoJust saw this film. High caliber stuff. Highly recommended. Quick fun fact: It was directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, director of S1 True Detective
