My own experience is that there is no correlation between online rankings and my own enjoyment. I enjoy some higly-rated popular movies, and I hate many of them with a passion. Many of my favorite movies, which I would consider truly great, are somewhere around 4-6 on IMDb/metacritic because they don't have mainstream appeal. Suggestion engines like NetFlix or Spotify don't seem to do any better at predicting what I like. There's no accounting for taste.
