Avatar is quite clearly about the north American Indians, since that is likely what Cameron knows best.
- chipsy 17y agoIf you didn't know who made Avatar, would you still be so confident about this interpretation? A major part of art is its ability to be a "reflecting pool" and generate discussion about current topics, even if the resulting analogies go far beyond author's intent. Avatar does very well at this because it's so focused. The focus makes the story simplistic, but also metaphorically powerful. It makes a valid interpretation of the story - any valid one - feel much stronger.
- elblanco 17y agoI agree, my wife, who is not from North America originally, saw the Na'vi as "Africans".
- dejb 17y agoGiven the fact that it is about a 'mined resource' you could just as easily see it relating to the Middle East - especially since the US is actually engaged there at the moment and the troops are modelled on US Marines. From an Australian perspective it would seem to be about the 'aboriginals' (the word is actually used in the film). I'm sure there are many other interpretations. Edit : I just read a review that thought it strongly evoked the Vietnam War.
- gaius 17y agoI don't see the Vietnam connection (apart from "being in the jungle") - there was nothing in the Vietnam conflict that was about resource extraction.
- billswift 17y agoYou must be fairly young; there was a lot of Leftist crap being spouted in the seventies about Vietnam really being about American access to Vietnamese tin. One problem was that Vietnam didn't really have more tin than many other places.
