  Perhaps I've just been lucky, but I've been working in the US for the last 15 years, and the policy at all 4 of the companies I've worked for has been: "if you're sick, don't come in". None of the companies I've worked for has set a limit on the number of days you could be sick for, nor encouraged anyone who didn't feel healthy to come in to work. I appreciate that some companies may do that, but I've never really understood how that works, given that illness is (mostly) not something you can control.

    You've been pretty lucky. I would say 90% of workplaces do not have a sick policy like that.
