I think its cultural thing, nothing more. All kids in Iraq and neighboring countries sent their kids to school alone. Public schools didn't have any transportation, so you pretty much had to walk to school regardless of where you lived. I was lucky that my school was only a mile away. Kids who had their parents walk them to school were made fun of, which is why I think its a cultural thing.
