That article and the comments support your argument better than mine and I have to defer to ChuckMcM's expertise -- it predates mine by a lot, my first experience with Unix-like operating systems was in 1996 and his memory is better than mine anyway. I'm 100% certain I remember the instructions for partitioning being related to file system corruption, but that may well have come long after the original design of the FSH.
