The Nobel Peace Prize 2015 attributed to tunisian people
- korisnik 11y agoWell, not "people" as a whole but rather the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet which partook in the transition to democracy.
- Legogris 11y agoYeah, this is like saying it was "attributed to american people" when it was awarded to the American Friends Service Committee in 1947.
- klausjensen 11y agoSome of the people that have received the Nobel Peace Prize: - Yasser Arafat - Henry Kissinger - European Union - Barack Obama - United Nations Can we please stop paying attention to the Nobel Peace Prize now? It is the equivelant of the web-awards that used to be plastered on geocities websites 15-20 years ago.
- peteretep 11y ago> It is the equivelant of the web-awards that used to be > plastered on geocities websites 15-20 years ago. Ah I see. I'm guessing you've won one too...?
- velik_m 11y agoHey now, as a member of European Union, i am quite happy to refer to myself as Nobel Peace Prize winner.
- ascorbic 11y agoYes. I was Time Man of the Year 2006 as well.
- vanderZwan 11y ago> Can we please stop paying attention to the Nobel Peace Prize now? Why? I mean, you might not approve of everyone it was awarded to, but what exactly bothers you about discussing the Nobel Peace Prize? More importantly, whether these recipients deserved it doesn't tell me anything about the group who got it this year.
- nebolo 11y agoYou don't like some of the more controversial laureates therefore we should ignore it. Is that the point? Each of those people received the award for a reason. You may disagree with it, and perhaps that reason (particularly in light of subsequent developments) was insufficient.
- eva1984 11y agoThey are running out of ideas. The peace prize has drifted too far to be taken seriously, a perfect example to hijack then abuse the influence, and finally lose it.

- chr15p 11y ago(I dont know much about Kissinger so putting him aside) I think you misunderstand the purpose of the prize. Its not about "these are saintly people who have never hurt a fly" nor is it "here are organizations whose politics we agree with". Its a real world reward for people and organizations that try to pull peace from the midst of violence. It shouldn't be a surprise that a lot of the people who get it have been heavily involved in violence simply because those are the people that have the power to change the path they and their followers are on. Yasser Arafat shared it with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, tried to move the Israel/Palestine situation onto the road for peace, they may not have achieved it but for a while it appeared they might, and at least they showed that an agreement wasn't entirely impossible. The EU was set up to prevent war in western Europe (cradle of two world wars in less then 30 years), form that point of view it was entirely successful, if only because we spent the next 50 years discussing the exact definition of a banana. The UN has been the place every country in the world goes to to present its case against other countries, arms is now no longer the only resort in a dispute. Its also the place where peace is negotiated and that provides neutral 3rd party troops to enforce it. Sure its not prevented every war ever but its done a lot better job then anything else in the history of the world ever. The weakest case is for Barack Obama but people all over the world looked at him and said "look, a non-white man is the most powerful man in the world, maybe there is hope for a fairer world after all!" and so as an example to people world wide who know nothing about US politics and care less, that a fairer more equal world might be acheivable he is still not a bad choice. It also shouldn't be a surprise that sometimes the recipients fail, the world is a messy place, but its not about rewarding perfection its about rewarding the trying, and through the reward encouraging others to do the same. Don't think of the prize as being for believing in peace, think of it as being a reward for having the guts to try and change the old ways of violence and it makes much more sense. Of course sometimes they get it wrong, but at least the prize committee tries.
- resiros 11y agoIronically, the Quartet is quite controversial in Tunisia (I'm Tunisian), some sees it a businessmen-controlled organization that is steering the political scene in Tunisia, while others see it as a left-controlled organization that is doing the same. All in all, a lot of people were not happy with these organizations mingling with the politics of the country. So I would say, this news came as a big surprise to us. Sarcastic comments has been popping all around on social media since the announcement.
- nabla9 11y agoAccording to your description (quite controversial. .some see it as businessmen-controlled .. while others see it as a left-controlled organization ...a lot of people were not happy) Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet has all the attributes of organization representing the values of pluralistic democracy. It makes everyone equally unhappy while avoiding violence in decision making.
- notNow 11y agoEvery political organization would be viewed as controversial esp. in a highly partisan atmosphere so I am not surprised to hear this from you even if it contradicts the sentiment I get from my Tunisian friends online today. By the way, I'd take a politically ambitious organizations and NGOs over military-backed rule anytime of the day. So count your blessings and have some leniency or leeway for these organization as the other alternative would a military hellhole like Egypt (Egyptian here) تحيا تونس حرة مستقلة
- KhalilK 11y agoTunisian here. This just goes to show how unreliable the Norwegian Nobel Committee is. Also, flagged for a very misleading title.
- notNow 11y agoTunisia is the only functioning democracy in the aftermath of the so-called Arab spring and that's why I'm very happy see the struggle of Tunisian people to be recognized internationally like this.
- HugoDaniel 11y agoThere goes Snowden+Assange+Manning... again.
