So what happens if people get to Mars, are they in control of the planet? Or does the country that ships them out there maintain them as constituents?

- JBReefer 11y agoThat's basically what happened with the discovery of the new world - maintaining control with slow communication and inability to project power over the seperating distance doesn't really work
- aggie 11y agoNorth America had considerable natural resources which allowed the colonies to be self-sufficient in short order. An equivalent transition to sovereignty could still happen on Mars but it would probably look much different and last much longer.
- mburns 11y agohttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty The State that launches the spacecraft/crew gets jurisdiction in cases of crime, but Earth governments can't claim celestial bodies (like a patch of Mars) as their sovereign land or setup military bases, etc.
- hellbanner 11y agoSo how does property on foreign planets work, for Earth governments?
- twic 11y agoIt doesn't. Real property, land, can't be owned off the Earth, any more than it can be owned at sea.
- eveningcoffee 11y agoIn theory. I would say that this goes right out of the window when somebody gains a real military power to actually be able to enforce their ownership on Mars.
