Ask HN: Any recommendations on good C projects?

As a part of my college course I just wrote basic code for converting assembly code into machine code and I really enjoyed it. I felt closer to the machine. I am really interested in doing more projects like this which involve low level programming and help in improving your understanding of how actually the hardware and machine works. Any cool ideas/recommendations will be more than welcome.
