It turns out it's limited to at best 20fps, actually:
function animate() {
var delay = 50;
setTimeout(function() {
requestAnimationFrame(animate);
}, delay);
render();
};
Replacing that with
function animate() {
requestAnimationFrame(animate);
render();
};
makes it smooth as butter :)
