It's all there, just different.
PowerShell = bash, Chocolatey = homebrew, Windows Server Containers = docker, Hyper-V+powershell = vagrant, DSC = ansible etc etc.
I don't use Windows 10 for reference though. Still on 8.1 until they fix a few things and release a version-matched server platform.
- bradyd 11y agoVagrant works on Windows. You can use Hyper-V or VirtualBox for the virtual machine environment.
- togusa 11y agoI know. However it's buggy on windows and painful for deploying windows VMs on (with packer).
- mpweiher 11y ago> PowerShell = bash While a great fan of PowerShell in theory, in practice it seems to be extremely cumbersome. Sort of the opposite of bash and other Unix shells, which suck in theory and are very useful/convenient/powerful in practice.
- Someone1234 11y agoCumbersome or you just aren't familiar with it yet? The whole design of PS is meant to make it so you can "guess" the names of cmdlets you've never used before. Everything is Verb-Noun, Get-Service, New-Service, Restart-Service, Stop-Service, etc. Discoverability is valued over succinctness.
- UK-AL 11y agoAlthough you can have succinctness, most commands have shortcuts for them. Get-Content = gc or cat for example
- Karunamon 11y agoWhich is fine when you're starting out, but infinitely frustrating after you have an idea of what you're doing. A recent example, looking for errors in windows logs: Get-Childitem "C:\Windows\" -recurse -Include *.log ` | Select-String "Error" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue ` | Group-Object filename | Sort-Object count -descending Closest *NIX analogue I can think of would be grep -r Error /var/log/ | sort English is an arguably fine speaking language but an awful programming one. I love what Powershell can do, but gods do I hate typing it.
- Touche 11y agoI'd also wager Select-String is an order of magnitude slower than grep or ag.
- RamseyMcGrath 11y agoYou'd be wrong (at least for grep) http://www.jwgoerlich.us/blogengine/post/2013/01/21/Grep-versus-Select-String-Speedtest.aspx http://www.jwgoerlich.us/blogengine/post/2013/01/21/Grep-ver...
- Touche 11y ago> Cumbersome or you just aren't familiar with it yet? Cumbersome. To create my own cmdlet that does the cool stuff Powershell can do (as far as piping) my choices are a terrible language like ps1 or .NET. On Unix I can use pretty much whatever I want because the shell isn't tied to a specific runtime.
- Arnavion 11y agoOn Unix you can do pretty much whatever you want as long as "whatever I want" can be represented by a string of text. In PS you get to work with objects. PS is more like a Python shell than bash. If you want, your PS commandlets can return strings as well, so it's not like every part of your pipeline has to be in PS either.
- gcb0 11y agoyeah, powershell is limited on the backward compatibility with dos. the few times i had to do anything on windows more than that one-off time, i end up installing a sshd (there are a few options) and use putty to localhost.
- megablast 11y agoPowershell is great, it lets you hack into almost any machine and take control of it, incredibly easily.
- togusa 11y agoBollocks.
- midnightmonster 11y agoSo, no, developers on windows are not stumbling in the night. But also, no, your skills and familiarity are not transferable from OS X to Windows. In contrast, I was a desktop (laptop) Linux user until a year or so ago, and found my skills almost entirely transferable to OS X.
- CamatHN 11y agoI have Vagrant running on my Windows 10 machine fine. It's native.
