I've only heard of the issue from the LGBTQ stance, and I'm not very clear here. But I'm wondering, for these people, why not just legally change your name?

- djur 11y agoLegally changing one's name ranges from "a pain in the ass" to "impossible", depending on jurisdiction and the contexts in which you have used your previous legal names. It is also generally part of the program for trans* people to spend a period of time living as their gender (name, clothes, etc.) before more permanent (medically and legally) steps are taken.
- kuschku 11y agoTake for example Germany: Photocopying your ID is a crime, and changing your name is impossible (unless you get a court verdict that there is an actual need for you to change your name). So Facebook’s Real Name policy forces me to get a court verdict and commit a crime? Great...
- TazeTSchnitzel 11y agoAre you British? Because outside of the UK, changing your name is much more difficult than just printing off and signing a piece of paper.
- rmc 11y ago> why not just legally change your name? Well, what if you're not fully out of the closet yet? What if you're a teenager in a very religious household?
