In reality I don't think ads are a problem, as long as they aren't annoying, are hosted by the webpage I am on, have zero trackers and are related to the content on the page. Though the best system will always be free primary content with paid "premium" content. That way if you enjoy the content of the webpage you can support them, but you aren't required to pay to figure out if you do enjoy it.
