My favourite bit of JavaScript game dev from 2004 was DHTML Lemmings (http://www.elizium.nu/scripts/lemmings/ http://www.elizium.nu/scripts/lemmings/) - a great implementation of Lemmings, including destructible terrain, without canvas/webgl!
