So this is interesting to me because of the concept of futurism in general. People in 1900 were thinking about the future, and what it would be like. They were seeing significant technological progress on that timescale, and wondering what would happen next. In contrast, I would guess that most people living in 1800 wouldn't imagine the world of 1900 much different from their own, though we also saw dramatic changes in that time with the industrial revolution in full swing. So futurism itself is a relatively new thing.
