Senators represent states, not people. Prior to the 17th Amendment, Senators were generally chosen by state legislatures. Do farmers get federal pork? Sure, and it's just as wrong as populous states getting federal pork for mass transit. The real problem here is the concentration of power in the federal government, which is far removed from the intent of the Founding Fathers. See the 9th and 10th Amendments. The case of sugar is particularly egregious as we are subsidizing growers who are destroying the Everglades. OK, maybe that's a bit of hype, but it's not that far from the truth.
