Anybody fascinated by these would probably enjoy reading The Golden Age by Michael Ajvaz. The first half is a (fictional) account of a researcher's stay on an island with a tribe of people who seemingly have no cultural or artistic expression outside of their Book. The entire tribe contributes to the Book, altering storylines, adding footnotes, and even expanding existing stories via small pouches glued to the pages containing additions to the stories.
It's pretty fascinating following the recursion of the stories as the author spends the back half of the story exploring the stories within the Book.
