I think this is fantastic advice. I've met some amazing people while traveling, just because I made some offhand, nerdy comment. Just a few days ago, on New Year's Eve, I got a free night at my hostel for fixing their Wifi, plus a contact for when I'm in Australia, after I spouted off on some philosophical differences between FOSS and closed-source software.
