Hmm, what I describe is what I learned when taking the SAT years ago. Never took the GMAT though, not sure how different it would be. The suggestion does sound ridiculous, although they are telling you how they design the test. I would hope in later chapters they talk about good approximation techniques, and leave the similarities technique as an absolute last resort.
