Veteran gentoo user here. I've learned the joys of --quiet on many an old laptop for exactly this reason. There is no other process that I know of that is more likely to bottleneck a terminal. Accidentally cat some-binary-file? ctrl-c that sucker asap, hope you didn't have anything else important going on in there.
