I work in a lab which has approximately a 50/50 gender split. I personally have never felt uncomfortable with or been confused about working with people of the opposite sex, and I haven't heard any negative stories regarding inter-sex conflict or awkwardness from colleagues. As long as everyone acts like a professional, which isn't really that difficult, then I don't foresee many problems arising in a mixed gender workplace.
