I have trouble believing this one. Poole has stated that the controversies 4chan was involved in in September had a big negative personal impact, principally dealing with legal threats from celebrities who had their photos leaked on the site. Two other events, which he conspicuously hasn't commented on would have unquestionably left scars on his ego and soul: the 8chan exoduses and 'cuckgate'. I would speculate that these had a far greater negative personal impact on the poor guy than any of the others.
Some of the best original content creators and experienced posters migrated to 8ch, taking the mantle from 4chan as the authentic core of internet culture. It's evident that at least a couple of years ago, moot took some pride in 4chan's leading place in contemporary culture, so to lose the one single point of pride associated with the site must have been a big blow. In his farewell livestream, he responded to repeated questions about 8chan by talking about just about every other 'chan'-style site on the internet, making the omission very obvious, and indicating it was something he took personally.
Second is the situation with one of his friends with whom he was very clearly in unrequited love being revealed and mocked by his own board, giving rise to the current ubiquity of the 'cuck' meme across the internet (and even spreading into mainstream American politics). I know if I had been in his place, this second event would have been quite devastating not only for destroying my hopes and illusions of love and connection with this girl (she even joined in the mockery in a way), but also for having it be that basis of my ignominious fall from beloved benevolent dictator to a hated object of mockery and derision across the entire internet.
When you take these last two events into consideration, I don't think anyone could blame him for his decision to quit. Hope he has a much better time in his future endeavors.
- tomatohs 11y agoYour comment is entirely speculative pessimism. Please leave the trolling to 4chan.
- pervycreeper 11y agoOut of consideration for all parties involved I only included enough detail to give a big picture sense of what those events entailed, but rest assured that they were pretty well documented at the time. Take home message is that the users got very personal at the end of moot's tenure.
- Koahku 11y ago>Take home message is that the users got very personal at the end of moot's tenure. Yet, when he left, users from the most popular boards (and even separate imageboards!) made thousands of drawings, wrote songs and made videos to thank him and say farewell. I think the number of people that liked him vastly outnumbered those who legitimately hated him.
- bhaumik 11y agoPoole's situation did not give rise to the 'cuck' meme: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/cuck http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/cuck
- pervycreeper 11y agoNo, but that's when it reached critical mass, IMO.
- AgentME 11y agoThere have been many 4chan spin-offs. 8chan is not the first or the last. If a google trends comparison means anything, it doesn't look like there's any fear about 4chan ever being surpassed soon. >he responded to repeated questions about 8chan by talking about just about every other 'chan'-style site on the internet, making the omission very obvious, and indicating it was something he took personally. Perhaps he didn't want to feed the trolls in his farewell.

I find it very confusing that 8ch users tend to hold this "migration" as a huge event in 4chan history. As far as the archives can tell, the whole "gamergate" scandal had no affect on traffic and even more confusing is the fact that outside of /v/, no one really cares about 8ch/gamergate. Yet I see this rhetoric time and time again, that everyone went to 8ch - when, according to 8ch's own stats, board like /vg/ do more posts per hour than the entirety of 8ch. In hindsight, its no different 7chan before it and moot is completely right in his assessment of the situation - a small group of users got a mad, on a single board and decided to create a new website. More power to you guys, but for those us who don't browse /v/ (and 4chan is more than just /v/), we didn't notice anything.

As far as the archives can tell, the whole "gamergate" scandal had no affect on traffic I'm sure HN users will understand that quantity != quality. HN's community is certainly not without its faults, but I doubt that anyone would argue in 2015 that Reddit is the better site for discussing topics relevant to HN's interests just because it has more users. 8chan users tend to think that most of the people worth talking to left 4chan over the past year, and that only the dregs remain on 4chan. Whenever I've visited 4chan since then, it feels like a completely different site from what I remember not even a year ago. Like the mildly edgy bastard child of the latest generation of reddit and tumblr kiddos, full of awkward fucks desperately trying to fit in by spamming shit they read about "4chan history" on Know Your Meme. >In hindsight, its no different 7chan before it I was there for 7chan. The difference is that 7chan was about people being elitist for the sake of being elitist, rather than leaving because they thought moot and company were compromising 4chan's core values. To this day 7chan mods will ban anyone for coming even close to admitting that they have ever visited 4chan. On 8chan, people will just laugh at you and tell you to lurk a bit more. >a small group of users got a mad, on a single board and decided to create a new website. More power to you guys, but for those us who don't browse /v/ (and 4chan is more than just /v/), we didn't notice anything. I didn't (and don't) even browse /v/, and I thought GamerGate was just /v/ being stupid again in its early days, but I immediately left 4chan when moot banned discussion of it from the entire site (read: banned anyone that mentioned it anywhere, in any form). I had become fed up with moot and company's meddling in the affairs of the community (see the "janny" in this comment section commenting about how it pained him to ban people for "minor infractions", or rather, things that no member of the community actually cared about or considered harmful in the slightest), and outright banning a controversial topic was the last straw. This should have set off red flags for anyone with any kind of backbone or sense of awareness left in the community. If you really hadn't run into problems with the staff from 2012 onward, then either you mostly lurk, or you're a clueless frog happy in his boiling pot. Have fun being datamined by the Japanese equivalent of Kim Dotcom, while your janitors delete and ban anything resembling dissent. https://i.imgur.com/dkIFWMK.png https://i.imgur.com/dkIFWMK.png The only reason why there hasn't been a backlash since the Hiroyuki takeover is that today's 4chan users are utterly clueless about the community's history. You can easily see that by how they have responded positively to the takeover instead of recoiling in horror at their site's death knell.
- Tehnix 11y agoI think you give way too much credit to the severity of the 8ch migration. It was not felt at all on many boards that I frequent. As another poster mentioned in the comments, it seems more as a small very vocal group that moved, and the traffic stats seem to agree. The comparison was given that one hour on /vg/ was more than the traffic on the whole of 8ch.
- monaway 11y agoAnd almost all of /vg/ is cancer. I'll take a slower site of people somewhat worth talking to over a bunch of smug 14 year old memelords circlejerking over TF2 hats and MMO guilds.
- monaway 11y agoOops, I forgot that c i r c l e j y r k trips an HN filter. I only post on throwaways these days because these moderation practices remind me a little too much of 4chan. No, seriously, you are more likely to be banned from 4chan these days than from HN. Let that sink in.
- emptyfile 11y ago>Some of the best original content creators and experienced posters migrated to 8ch, taking the mantle from 4chan as the authentic core of internet culture I'm guessing you're one of those, honestly people from other boards outside /v/ don't even know what 8ch is supposed to be and what the scandal is.
- spbaar 11y agoThis cuck thing is new to me. All I can find are some photos of them and they look like friends. She mentioned that he carried her luggage (maybe it was heavy?). Were users just being mean to him for fun or is there some more evidence I can't find? It's hard to find information about this. The banning of gamergate discussion didn't sit well for me, but I don't go to /v/ so I didn't care too much. Unless there was a specific explanation for it, I imagine the decision was to stop raiding and harassment, which seems reasonable considering it was borne out of two specific cases of harassing sjws. I found any gamergate discussion nauseating after about a month since it quickly came to encompass every single aspect of misogyny real or perceived in the gaming industry and the stakes themselves were so incredibly low. I cannot physically care about kotaku reviews. It would be like taking nyt trend pieces seriously. That was a long aside. Anyway, was there ever a reason given about gamergate banning or a reason to think it was a situation similar to sinfest?
