From 5 to 10 I took public transportation with my father to school. It was exciting, I got to read the paper like my dad on the bus. I got to meet new people at the bus stop. When I was 10 I started taking the public bus to school by myself. At first my father rode with me, helping me transfer, and watched me get off at my new school. After about a month of that, I took the bus and made the transfer by myself. I did dumb things. Played with matches and fire at the bus stop, but I didn't hurt myself. Since there weren't any other school children on my bus, if I wanted to socialize, I had to talk to adults - strangers (shudder). I did fine. I cherished my independence.
