I've worked in PHP since 2000 or so. It's amazing what it's turned into. That said it's still very painful and the ecosystem has a very long way to go in terms of build tools, etc etc. I bet there's a lot of money to be made in being able to turn old legacy php codebases into nice well factored systems in the next few years.
