A project I work on, "ftfy", deals with various Unicode issues. The result works pretty well in my gnome-terminal and Mac OS Terminal. You can probably see that GitHub in your web browser doesn't even come close to lining them up, though. And the problem can't be completely solved, because the standards have gaps, and there are some scripts where monospacing just isn't a thing.
