It probably wouldn't be so much of a problem if you could enter into some kind of deal with Google where you would pay a monthly fee in return for access to their API (for example) and Google would have a financial incentive to allow you to keep using it. In this case, however, the guy was expecting to get something for free to build his business on and that, I think, is just plain silly.
