In Australia, the standard is 20 days paid vacation per year. There is usually a set amount of paid sick leave as well (think it various across industries, but there are legal minimums.) Most places do not require a doctor's certificate for two or less days sick, unless they are adjacent to a public holiday. (I've never heard of anyone being able to substitute sick days while on vacation though.)
