Before you start plugging lots of systems together to solve this problem with a gaint hot mess, take a look at VoltDB. It basically is the system the article describes, but faster, more integrated and tested as a whole. It'll save you the multi-year discovery fun-tour it may take to realize that Storm punts on a lot of the more nuanced problems a system like this needs to solve. Just ask Twitter.
Disclosure, I'm one of the original VoltDB engineers. Apologies for the rant.
- ddorian43 11y agoDisclosure: Voltdb requires $$$? for HA. Even the sales guy didn't reply back after some emails.
- jhugg 11y agoYeah, VoltDB's not free for many purposes; neither is it Ellison expensive. Factor that into your decision. But at least the costs are up front. In both the VoltDB case, and the Kakfa/Storm/Cassandra case, licensing is probably not the biggest TCO driver, whether you pay Confluent/DataStax or not. The Right Questions: Which solution gets you to production faster? Which requires less engineering to get running? Which solution is more robust? Which solution is easier to manage? What is the quality of the insight from the solution? And yes, totally, what are the licensing costs?
