Wireless networks usually exhibit bursty packet loss on top of a base packet loss rate, which poses challenges for streaming (and everything else). QUIC uses forward error correction in some cases to mitigate this: https://www.chromium.org/quic https://www.chromium.org/quic
One model widely used for simulating packet loss on wireless networks is the Gilbert-Elliot model, http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.90.1411&rep=rep1&type=pdf http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.90.... which is supported by http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/dummynet/ http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/dummynet/ if you want to play with this yourself.
