Except that statement wasn't about Dyson:
> It’s important to have heroes. For me, Frank Whittle is just that. He was an intuitive engineer who amazingly got things right the first time, and had extraordinary foresight.
In fact, Dyson even emphasizes embracing failure rather than "getting it right the first time."
> For an engineer, that means sketching, prototyping, and testing. It’s not a linear process, but a cycle of failure which means that problems are solved properly (even if it takes longer).
- bsbechtel 11y agoYes, you're (partially) correct...I overlooked that point. However, Dyson actually emphasized getting the best way to solve a problem, even if it takes longer. Sketching, prototyping, and testing allows you to get to the best solution instead of the first solution. Dyson's point about Frank Whittle was that he can get to the best solution on fewer iterations than most...something highly desirable in any organization.
