Unfortunately, Tom's analysis is biased towards EKR and Salter being uncorrupted, when is too big an assumption. And if you bring it up to him, you are treated with mockery and derision for even thinking about it, because once you question one crypto expert's motives, you're obviously on a witch hunt.
- tptacek 11y agoIt's "Thomas", please. Why not go ask Matthew Green if EKR is "corrupted"? I feel like yours is the kind of critique you can only write after not having read my piece, as it suggests I think that Margaret Salter, an employee of the NSA, is "uncorrupted". If you feel like suggestions that EKR might be an NSA plant are greeted with derision, the level of research and insight people bring with that very serious accusation would be why. EKR helped write Dual_EC!, they suggest. EKR's defenders think Margaret Salter is just fine! they assert. Can you find any professional cryptographer or crypto engineer that has publicly suggested EKR is working for NSA?
- anonbanker 11y agoNope, but am I unable to determine if that is because they believe he's uncompromised, or due to a chilling effect caused by fear of speaking out. This means that character witnesses, such as Matthew Green, are little more than name-dropping in the wake of "exploit mitigation countermeasures" (tedunangst's words) in our crypto software. Which is why your blanket defences of EKR sometimes fall upon deaf ears. Before (and at the beginning of) Snowden's leaks, you were the first "big name" on HN to discredit him. When the leaks were proven true, you begrudgingly accepted while you downplayed the significance. I think you're a fantastic cryptographer, and smart as hell, but I just plain don't trust you or your motives. Sadly, questioning your reputation or motives will never get anything but silence (first time in years of attempts). But calling you Tom will make you all sorts of chatty. You should give that bug some attention.
- idlewords 11y agoSo what's your name? You're making some pretty ugly accusations here, it would be nice if you had the backbone to sign them.
- anonbanker 11y agoMy words don't matter due to pseudonymity? if you want to know why I'm pseudonymous, please refer to the "chilling effect" comments in grandparent. When you say you don't trust someone, is that an accusation? Otherwise, the only perceived accusation (he was a "nothing to see here" guy during the snowden leaks) is easily corroborated by his posting history. Go back to the first leaks, match up dates, and see what I'm talking about. I'm looking forward to your response.
- idlewords 11y agoImpugning the integrity of people on a public forum, without putting your name to it, and without providing evidence, makes you a coward.
- anonbanker 11y agoThere is evidence. I told you how to find it. you can slander me all you want, but it doesn't make my words less relevant. Edit:tried to create another account with my full name, but replying is prevented. At least dang knows who I am now. I trust that guy.
